Frequently Asked Questions

Install Screensaver Across a Network - Files Required

Question:

Installing a screensaver Across a Windows Network - Files Required

Answer:

You can install a screensaver over a Windows network by running the Screentime installer in quiet mode or by creating a script specific to your requirements.

You can create a "quiet" installer, one with no windows or messages, by selecting the "Quiet Mode" option in the Screentime builder or by running the the installer from the command line with a "/q" switch.

To create your own script to install the screensaver on a remote machine, follow these steps:

1) Create and locate your screensaver files.

Create a saver installer and install the saver on an admin machine. The installer will install a Screentime screensaver engine and a corresponding directory of required and optional files.

For Screentime 3.7 or later the screensaver engine is in the System32 directory and the data files reside in the Common Application Data directory (%ALLUSERSAPPDATA%).

screensaver:

C:\Windows\System32\thenameofyourscreensaver.scr

screensaver data files:

%ALLUSERSAPPDATA%\Screentime\thenameofyourscreensaver\*.*

On Windows XP %ALLUSERSAPPDATA% resolves to "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data". On Vista %ALLUSERSAPPDATA% resolves to "C:\ProgramData\".

The files in the "thenameofyourscreensaver” directory include the following files:

%ALLUSERSAPPDATA%\Screentime\thenameofyourscreensaver\expire.scf
%ALLUSERSAPPDATA%\Screentime\thenameofyourscreensaver\installer.scf
%ALLUSERSAPPDATA%\Screentime\thenameofyourscreensaver\saver1.dll
%ALLUSERSAPPDATA%\Screentime\thenameofyourscreensaver\saver2.dll
%ALLUSERSAPPDATA%\Screentime\thenameofyourscreensaver\saver.dat
%ALLUSERSAPPDATA%\Screentime\thenameofyourscreensaver\thenameofyoursaverswf.swf
%ALLUSERSAPPDATA%\Screentime\thenameofyourscreensaver\setwnd.scf - settings window graphic (optional)
%ALLUSERSAPPDATA%\Screentime\thenameofyourscreensaver\premon.scf - preview monitor graphic (optional)
%ALLUSERSAPPDATA%\Screentime\thenameofyourscreensaver\ping.txt - See Handling Firewalls for information.

(optional)
%ALLUSERSAPPDATA%\Screentime\thenameofyourscreensaver\thenameofyourscreensaver\*.* - your external files (optional)

For Screentime 2.5 to 3.5.5 the screensaver engine and data files can be found in the System32 directory.

screensaver:

C:\Windows\System32\thenameofyourscreensaver.scr

screensaver data files:

C:\Windows\System32\thenameofyourscreensaver dir\*.*

The files in the "thenameofyourscreensaver dir” directory include the following files:

C:\Windows\System32\thenameofyourscreensaver dir\expire.scf
C:\Windows\System32\thenameofyourscreensaver dir\installer.scf
C:\Windows\System32\thenameofyourscreensaver dir\saver1.dll
C:\Windows\System32\thenameofyourscreensaver dir\saver2.dll
C:\Windows\System32\thenameofyourscreensaver dir\saver.dat
C:\Windows\System32\thenameofyourscreensaver dir\thenameofyoursaverswf.swf
C:\Windows\System32\savernthenameofyourscreensaverame dir\setwnd.scf - settings window graphic (optional)
C:\Windows\System32\thenameofyourscreensaver dir\premon.scf - preview monitor graphic (optional)
C:\Windows\System32\thenameofyourscreensaver dir\ping.txt - See Handling Firewalls for information.

(optional)
C:\Windows\System32\thenameofyourscreensaver dir\*.* - your external files (optional)

2) Write your script to copy these file onto the remote machine.

3) Set the saver as the active screensaver.

There are ways to set the screensaver to be the active saver. One way is to add a call in your script to our utility ActiveSaver - a command line application - available as a free download from our Support:Utilites page.

To execute the ActiveSaver from the command line, type the application's full path name and parameter values.

Sample MS-DOS prompt command:

C:\activeScr.exe mySaverName false
  • parameter 1: your saver's name - ex: mySaverName
  • parameter 2 (optional): true or false - Open display control panel after screensaver is activated. If you do not provide a value, the application will open the screensaver control panel.
