Frequently Asked Questions
Naming Your Screen Saver - Capitalization Problems
Question:
How long can my screen savers name be? The name I see in the Control Panel is wrong. Some of the capital letters in my screen saver name being changed to lower case letters. Why?
Answer:
Your screen saver's name can be a maximum of 63 characters (Mac or Windows).

Windows OS may change the capilization of your screen saver's name.

The Windows Display Control panel creates it's list of savers every time it's launched using the filenames of the .scr files it finds in it's "Windows" or "System" directories.

Non NT machines: C:/Windows/System32 and C:/Windows
NT machines: C:/Winnt/System32 and C:/Winnt

Let's say your screen saver is called "BIG Top Screensaver". If you are running XP and using a recent version of ScreenTime, navigate to the C:?Windows?System32 directory, show hidden files, and you will see your screen saver engine file (BIG Top Screensaver.scr). And notice it's been installed with the correct name.

Out testing has shown us that if the second letter in a the first word of the saver's name is uppercase, the control panel messes up the capitalization in the name when it's building it's screen saver list?!?!

You can prove this to yourself by closing the control panel, renaming your .scr file and reopening the control panel.

Here are some combinations we have tried:

Filename in C:/Windows/System32 --> Saver Name in the display properties control panel

BIG.scr --> Big
B I G.scr --> B I G
BiG.scr --> B i G
BIg.scr --> Big
B IG.scr --> B IG

Notice you break our "corruption" test when you rename the scr file. You will have to rebuild the saver in ScreenTime once you decide on a new name.

We recommend either including spaces -- "B I G Top Screensaver.scr" -- or ALL lowercase letters to address this problem.
